Právě to sasko-lauenburským vévodům pomohlo zvládnout určité kritické momenty (jako podezření z velezrady před smrtí Albrechta z Valdštejna) a udržet si vysoké postavení hned v několika armádách zapojených do třicetileté války. |

The 17th century is generally seen as a turbulent era because of wars, political instability, and economical changes. This can be illustrated upon the example of the Dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg. At the beginning of the 17th century, there were many young members of the family who got married to other aristocratic families in Northern Germany or in the Habsburg Empire. Some of them made a great career in military or diplomacy which led to establishing advantageous contacts with influential people. This helped the dukes to endure some critical moments (such as the suspicion of treason upon the murder of Albrecht of Wallenstein) and to hold high ranks in many armies which got involved in the Thirty Years’ War, in particular in armies of the Habsburg Empire and Sweden. However, few of the dukes left a male heir so the male line of the family came to extinction in 1689 and it were the duchesses and princesses of Saxe-Lauenburg who took over the family heritage and continued the family traditions. The paper focuses on acquiring of estates in Bohemia and development of residences and gardens in their vicinity, as well as on the building of social connections within the Bohemian aristocracy. Julius Francis who belong to the second generation settled in Bohemia served in the Imperial army and distinguished himself, inter alia, during the liberation of Vienna from the Turkish siege in 1683. He was, however, also known for a broad range of his private interests, including alchemy, glass-production, and architecture. Upon his sudden death in 1689, however, he left no male heir. While the dominions in Bohemia were inherited by his two daughters, Anna Maria Francisca and Sibylla Augusta, the rule over Lauenburg was lost due to the fact that females were not eligible as heirs under the law valid in the Duchy of Lauenburg. Looking closer at the residences of the dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg, it is also possible to notice the presence of many interesting scholars at the courts at Ostrov, Zákupy or Lauenburg who worked for the dukes or wrote and published about their gardens and residences. |
